Susan D. Hook

Susan D. Hook, 75, of Exton, was welcomed home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 with her family by her side. She was the beloved wife of William L. Hook, with whom she shared 47 years of marriage. Born in Maplewood, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Edwin and Vivian Miers Spear. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Susan was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed making her own clothes and other items for her family and friends.  She always spoke of her love for and fond memories of Maplewood, NJ, where she was a member of Prospect Presbyterian Church and attended Columbia High School.  She enjoyed being a part of her local Girl Scouts troop and earned the highest award, the Curved Bar.  She adored children and when she graduated from Cedar Crest College, Susan went on to teach the third Grade. Her passion for teaching was surpassed only by her devotion to her four children to whom she dedicated the rest of her life. She loved making their house a home and took pleasure in art and decorating, particularly floral arrangements she embroidered herself.  Susan was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at the early age of 37 and bravely faced adversity with courage and aplomb over the years.  She will be remembered by those who knew her for her unfailing cheerful and positive attitude; never complaining and always polite and kind. She handled her complicated medical condition with grace and fortitude.

As her children grew more independent, she enjoyed the simple life of reading, music (especially that of her high school and college years) and spending time with her husband and their dog. She loved being a grandmother and was adored by her grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Susan is survived by her four children, Wendy (Sean) Higgins, Brian Hook, Christopher Hook and Rebecca Susan (John) Sweeney; her brother, Donald (Jean) Spear; her beloved grandchildren, Harper and McKenna Higgins and Ellette and Quintin Sweeney; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 18, 2021 at St. James Episcopal Church, 409 E. Lancaster Avenue, Downingtown.

Interment will be private with the family in Birdsboro Cemetery.
