Tribute

Howard Clinton Doane

On June 24, 2019, he was “absent from his body and present with his Lord!”  2 Corinthians 5:8

Howard was born on March 30, 1925 to Alden Doane Sr. & Ellen (Forshaw) Doane.  He lived in Richmond Hill, Queens, NY for 29 years.  On November 21, 1948, Howard married the love of his life Elaine, daughter of Harry and Elsie Schumacher.

Howard attended John Adams High School, as did his wife. He was Class President from his Freshman, to Junior year of high school. Howard and Elaine met after he served in WWII.  He served for three years in the U.S. Navy as a Radioman 2nd class aboard the U.S.S. Thornhill DE 195.  He saw action in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters and was honorably discharged on March 12, 1946.

Howard attended Hofstra University studying Philosophy and Psychology graduating in June 1951.  In 1962, he became an Account Agent for Allstate Insurance, and worked there for 31 years.  He was a Counselor at the “Sermons from Science”pavilion at the 1963 World’s Fair in New York.  Howard was active in the North Merrick Fire Department for 21 years and actively served in the Engine and Police Company, as Fire Inspector and was the Department’s Secretary.  He was an Assistant Manager of the   N. Merrick, PAL baseball program.  Howard was always active in the churches that he attended: as a Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Boards of Trustees and Deacons at The First Baptist Church of Merrick. At Ocean County Evangelical Free Church, he served as a Choir member, Deacon, Elder, and helped in their Prison Ministry.  In the last few years, Howard and Elaine, were among four generations of “Doanes” who worship at East Brandywine Baptist Church where he also enjoyed the Senior Ministry. He was always grateful for the faithful preaching of God’s Word.

Howard will be missed by his wife, Elaine, his two sons and their spouses: Russell and Debbie of Danbury, Connecticut and Brian & Janet of Downingtown, Pennsylvania.  He had six grandchildren: Timothy & his wife Jennifer, Heather Townsend, Mark & his wife Becca, Jessica & her husband Jason Emmanuel, Jacqueline & her husband Kyle Fox, and Carissa Doane; and twelve great-grandchildren: Ethan & Joshua Doane, Berton, Milo, Cabot & Sparrow Townsend, Natalie & Chara Doane, Jameson, Judah & Jobe Emmanuel and Logan Fox.

His favorite memories were when he committed his life to Jesus Christ, and when he was in the company of fellow believers.  Howard appreciated God’s daily blessings and thoroughly enjoyed being married to “Bunny,” his wife of 70 years.  His major concerns were for his friends who were outside of the family of God, who wouldn’t experience the inner peace and joy he enjoyed.  Howards favorite Bible verse was Matthew 6:33 -“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”  Howard proudly displayed two bumper stickers on his car: “Wise men still follow Christ” and “Keep Christ in Christmas!”
