Gerald C. Payton

Gerald C. Payton, 89, peacefully passed away the night of Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at St. Martha Manor in Downingtown. Born in Bridgeton NJ, he was the son of late Edward Payton and Ida Watson. Later in 1952, Gerald moved to Kensington NJ, then to Bryn Mawr, PA, afterwards, Gerald's final home was Exton PA. In 1954, he became husband to Marjorie (Marge) Payton for 58 years until her passing in 2012.

A graduate of Radnor High School, Jerry joined the Marines in 1952, in Cherry point North Carolina and station at Paris island as an airport control operator.

Jerry was a devoted husband, Father and Grandfather. He was patient, loving and kind and continued those traits until his last days. Those that remember him would know of his variety of interests; the Phillies, Eagles, bird watching, fishing, gardening, woodworking, crabbing, dancing, food, were all something he delighted in.

Jerry loved the Wildwood beach and would pass time watching black and white movies and a soap opera or two.

Autocar Trucking company was his place of employment for many years working as a welder. T

Jerry will also be remember him for his love for his churches, Saint Paul’s and Saint Andrews Episcopal churches where he was involved in the vestry and the church choir. Playing his guitar was a passion and he enjoyed his large CD collection of all types of music.

He had a deep compassion for all of his caregivers at Sunrise of Exton and Saint Martha Manor in Downingtown where he last resided.

Gerald is survived by his daughter, Nancy L. Rittenhouse (Michael); grandchildren, Lauren P. Rittenhouse and Matthew R. Rittenhouse; and sister Lynne Koppenhoefer.

In addition to his wife Marjorie, his daughter, Diane and his parents, Gerald is predeceased by his brothers, Edward, Elvin, and Blane; as well as sisters, Joyce Winship and Christine Kelly. A mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, December 19, 2019, 11:00 am, at Saint Andrews Church 7 Saint Andrews Lane, Glenmoore,PA 19343. A visitation will be held prior from 10-10:45 am.
