William J. Farkas

July 25, 1924 ~ February 8, 2024 (age 99) 99 Years Old

William "Bill" Joseph Farkas, 99, of Downingtown, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 8, 2024 at St. Martha Villa surrounded by his loving family.  He was the beloved husband of the late Norma H. Farkas (nee Yochum) with whom he shared 70 years of marriage prior to her passing in 2018.

Born in Pittsburgh, PA, he was one of five children raised by the late Joseph and Mildred Farkas (nee Baldauf).

Bill’s railroad career began with Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) in Pittsburgh in 1942. It was interrupted by duty to his country in WWII during which Bill served honorably in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943 until 1946. He then returned to the PRR and held various positions in the Pittsburgh area until a promotion with Penn Central to supervisor resulted in the relocation of his family to Rutledge, PA in 1966.  He retired from Conrail in 1986 as a night shift Diesel/Locomotive supervisor.

Upon retirement, he and Norma embarked on many travel adventures around the world.  He enjoyed golf; trips to the casino; playing poker; and watching the Eagles, Steelers, Phillies and Pirates.  Above all, his family was everything.

Bill was an active member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Morton, PA until he and Norma relocated to St Martha’s Villa in 2013 becoming a member of St. Joseph’s Church.

Dad to his six children: William (Joan), Elaine Allen (Russ), Thomas (Gwen), Kenneth (Dawn), Marilyn McClellan (Andy), and Annette Harlow (John); Pop to his 18 grandchildren (and spouses); Great Pop Pop to 24 great grandchildren.  He will be missed by his sister Millie; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be announced at a later date.

Interment will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Capuchin Friars Province of St. Augustine, 220 37th Street, Pittsburgh PA 15201.  A mission dear to his heart in honor of his late brother, Fr. Paul Farkas.
