Tribute

Sally Niness Graham passed away peacefully at her home in Downingtown, PA on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 after a brief illness.

Sally Higby Niness was born July 19, 1939 in Philadelphia PA to Samuel F. and Eunice H. Niness. She graduated from The Shipley School (’58) and Mount Holyoke College (’62). Upon graduation, she moved to New York City and was employed by Marine Midland Bank and later, as a hat buyer for Macy’s Department Store. While in New York, she met and married her late husband of 55 years, George R. Graham, Jr. In 1965, they moved to Downingtown to raise their family.

Over the years, Sally was first and foremost dedicated to her family. She was an active volunteer at the Agnes Irwin School and Episcopal Academy. She was an avid gardener who enjoyed working in and expanding her own gardens to the enjoyment of all who visited “the farm.” From welcoming hundreds to her home at events such as Chester County Day to her grandchildren’s birthday parties, she was the consummate hostess. She was a devoted member of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society where for over 30 years, she was a leader and volunteer at the Flower Show. In 2015, she was honored by PHS for her service as a mentor and role model of civic responsibility. She was also a dedicated board member or volunteer for other organizations in her community including Church Farm School and Chester County Historical Society.

Sally’s infectious smile, easy laugh and genuine interest and care for others will be remembered fondly by those who were known and loved by her

She is survived by her, daughter Kathryn Duggan (John); son George Graham, III (Kristen), three grandchildren; Gillian, Grace and George IV, her brother Samuel F. Niness (Joan), sister Mary Jane Littlepage (Richard), sister in law, Lois Tingler (David) and many nieces and nephews and their families.
