Robert “Red” Schmitt, age 86, of Tel Hai in Honey Brook, PA, passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2018, peacefully at home. Red was born in Teaneck, NJ, to the late Alois and Ann (Duffek) Schmitt.
Robert and his wife Virginia, resided in Downingtown for 30 years, eventually moving to Lake Ridge Community in Toms River, NJ for 21 years, and recently to Tel Hai Community for 3 years.
He was a graduate of Fairleigh Dickenson and Columbia Universities and a U.S. Army Veteran. Red was a social organizer, who loved planning trips and cruises for his friends and family. Red was a huge sports fan, and loved cheering on his college sports team, GO COLUMBIA AND PENN STATE UNIVERSITY! Red loved nothing more than spending time with his family and his grandchildren.
Robert is survived and missed by his wife Virginia, whom together shared 58 years of marriage, 3 children; Cathy (Michael) Mitro, of Shaker Heights, OH; James (Tia), of Manhattan, KS, and Bill (Karen) Schmitt, of Downingtown, PA, 7 grandchildren; Michael, Andrew, Samuel, Justin, Ryan, Meghan, and Cole, 1 brother Alois Schmitt, and many extended family members.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, August 23, 2018, 4-7:30PM, at James J. Terry Funeral home, 736 E. Lancaster Avenue, Downingtown, PA 19335, and on Friday, August 24, 9-10:15AM, at St. Joseph Church, 332 Manor Ave, Downingtown, PA 19335, funeral mass to follow at 10:30AM. Interment is private.
