Richard DeMell, 70, of Honey Brook PA passed away unexpectedly at Johns Hopkins Hospital due to complications from a stem cell transplant on Wednesday, February 13, 2019. Richard was the loving husband of Kathleen DeMell (nee Kold) for 45 years.
Born on October 31, 1948 in Cleveland Ohio, Rich was the son of the late Manuel and Rosella DeMell (nee Bunch). He was one of 5 children and grew up in Kirtland Ohio. Rich studied at Cleveland State University and was drafted into the US Army where he served as a military police officer in Korea. Richard resided in Willoughby and Mentor Ohio until the late 1970’s eventually relocating his family to Chester County, PA. Downingtown is where he and Kathy settled and raised their family.
In addition to his wife Kathleen, Richard is survived by his children, daughters Amy Coye (Steve) and Chrissy Chapracki (Steve) and son Michael DeMell (Kate), grandchildren, Colin and Mya Coye, Owen, Julie and Brendan Chapracki and Grant and Jake DeMell. Rich is also survived by his 4 siblings: Rosemary Marshall, Tom DeMell, Albert DeMell, and twin brother Bob DeMell. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and several cousins.
Rich was an avid golfer who had a passion for the game. His interests included being with his loved ones, following the stock market and keeping up with Fox News. He had a deep love for his family (especially his children and grandchildren) and always made them a priority. Rich was also known as, “Captain Cornhole” by his extended family for organizing the Annual Cornhole Tournament every summer (a title he truly loved). He served on the Board of Directors for the Exchange Club in West Chester PA, a community service organization that works to build and strengthen relationships in the area and focuses on preventing child abuse through education and community awareness.
Anyone who knew Rich would remember him most for being a man of upmost integrity. He always had a positive attitude, great sense of humor and a contagious laugh. His gentle nature and compassion towards others made him adored and truly loved by all who knew him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, February 19, 2019 beginning at 11:00am at Saint Peter Catholic Church 2835 Manor RD, West Brandywine Twp. Family and friends may be received from 9:30-10:45am.
A visitation will be held on Monday evening, February 18, 2019 at the James J. Terry Funeral Home 736 E. Lancaster Ave Downingtown, PA from 6-8pm.
