Peter Michael Kennedy
July 3, 1945 ~ February 8, 2024 (age 78) 78 Years Old
Peter Michael Kennedy, 78, of Downingtown, PA passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 8, 2024. Peter bravely fought his illness for six years taking every treatment opportunity available to be with his family for as long as possible.
He was the beloved husband of Nancy Engster Kennedy, with whom he shared 53 years of marriage. Nancy was everything to Peter, caring for him with tremendous love and compassion.
Born in Flushing, New York, Peter was the son of the late John and Anne Ryan Kennedy.
Peter attended Brooklyn Preparatory High School and Fordham University, where he graduated with a degree in Marketing. Upon completing Officer Candidate School, he served in the U.S. Army as a 1st Lieutenant in an artillery squad during the Vietnam War. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal.
Peter continued on to serve his country as a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation for 32 years. He worked in the Boston Organized Crime Unit and was selected to the first Boston FBI SWAT Team. Mid-way through his career, Peter transitioned from the Organized Crime Unit to become the Principal Firearms Instructor for the Boston FBI Division. Peter loved traveling throughout New England conducting schools for federal agencies as well as local and state police departments, on topics related to firearms, significant law enforcement issues, and defensive tactics. Peter retired in 2002 and remains a highly respected member of the law enforcement community for his knowledge and teaching style.
Notwithstanding his impressive career, Peter’s most coveted title was that of “Grampy”. In 2012, Peter and Nancy, moved from Chelmsford, MA to Downingtown, PA to be close to their grandchildren. They proudly attended countless dance recitals, football games, wrestling matches, track meets, lacrosse games, field hockey games, and yes, even the orchestra and chorus concerts. Even during treatment, Peter made every effort to see his grandkids doing things they loved. He was never happier than in the presence of his family.
In addition to his wife, Peter is survived by his children, Shannon (Jimmy) and Matthew (Michele), grandchildren, Emily, Caroline, James and Anne, his sister, Regina, his brother, Timmy, and grand-pups, Callie, Benson, Poppy, and Hazel (Anvil). He was predeceased by his brother, Andy.
