Michael Hearn

April 30, 1915 ~ February 12, 2018 (age 102) 102 Years Old

Michael J. “Mike” Hearn, Jr. passed away on Feb.12, 2018, after a brief illness. He was 102 and had resided at the Villa St. Martha in Downingtown, Pa., for the past seven years.

Born on April 30, 1915, in the Bronx, he was the son of Michael Joseph Hearn, Sr. and Agnes (Kenny) Hearn. The third of six children, he grew up on Fordham Road. On April 30, 1927, his twelfth birthday, he moved to North Brunswick, N.J. His parents, and a sister, resided there for 53 years.

Mr. Hearn was educated at Sacred Heart School and Saint Peter's High School, both in New Brunswick. He attended St. Benedict's Preparatory School, in Newark, N.J., and then Fordham University, graduating in 1939. In 2006 he was inducted into the Fordham Athletics Hall of Fame. He also participated in the Penn Relay races during his college years.

He did a tour of duty in the Army from 1942 to 1946, earning the rank of Captain. Following service, he worked for the Traveler's Insurance Company in Manhattan for over thirty years, retiring in 1980.  He resided in the town of Highland Park, NJ for 33 years.  He was a congregant, there, at St. Paul's RC Church

He was the husband of the late Mildred Peck from 1947 until her death in 1979.  In 1983, he moved to Vero Beach, Fla., living with many of his siblings, in the community of Vista Royale. He resided there until 2011. 

Mike was a football and baseball fan and an avid golfer when he lived in Florida. He loved all things Irish and made several trips to Ireland after his retirement.

Survivors include: his son, Michael Thomas, of Brooklyn, N.Y. (David Spegal); his stepdaughter, Mrs. Beverly “Penny” Holm, of Audubon, Pa.; five grandchildren, Keith Holm, Ian Holm, Jennifer Holm (Jonathan Hamel), Jonathan Holm (Amanda), and Matthew Holm (Cyndi Koon); and six great grandchildren, Lindsay Angus, Kendal Holm, Fiona and Alexander Holm, and Will and Millie Hamel. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 10:30-11:00 am on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 332 Manor Ave., Downingtown, Pa. A memorial mass will follow at 11.

Burial will be private at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Michael’s name to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 332 Manor Ave., Downingtown, PA, 19335.
