John W. Hammond, 91, of West Brandywine Township, passed away on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at Freedom Village.

Born in Cleveland, OH, John was the son of the late Wallace L. and Margaret (Pontious) Hammond. He was the husband of the late Marjorie “Sue” McIntosh, who passed away in 2013.

John proudly served in the US Navy. He received his Masters in Industrial Engineering from The Ohio State University in 1952 where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta. John retired as a Director of Finance in 1993 after 41 years of service with E. I. du Pont.

Traveling the world was John’s favorite past-time.  Together he and his wife visited 47 states and visited 59 countries. He took great pride in his family and home. When he was not traveling he could be found taking exquisite care of his lawn and gardens.  As one of the first occupants of Freedom Village, John spent countless hours in the last 20 years volunteering on their finance committee and helping residents with their taxes.  He was a life-long member of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. serving as both Trustee and Elder.

John is survived by his children: Margaret “Peggie”Lanzone, wife of Joe Lanzone of Philadelphia, Cathleen Bunge, wife of Stuart Bunge of Georgetown, TX, John W. Hammond Jr,  husband of Judy Hammond, of Houston, TX, and Barbara Smith, wife of Bradford Smith of Lancaster; his sister-in-law: Martha McIntosh Hammond; 10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, John was preceded in death by his brother: P. Donald Hammond.

Services will be conducted privately at the convenience of the family.
