Joan Marie Phillips
Joan Marie Robinson Phillips, 83, most recently of Coatesville PA, passed away on July 8, 2017. She was the beloved wife of the late Dr. William H. Phillips and the cherished mother to seven children. Joan was the only child of Anna T. and Francis J. Robinson of North Wales, PA.
Born and raised in the Fairmont section of Philadelphia, Mrs. Phillips attended St. Francis Xavier Grade School and John W. Hallahan High School. Joan worked for Beck Engineering before marrying Bill and starting a family in 1954. In addition to living in Philadelphia she was a long time resident of Havertown and Wayne, PA.
Mrs. Phillips was a parishioner of Annunciation BVM Catholic Church (Havertown PA), Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church (Strafford PA) and St. Peter Catholic Church in Coatesville, PA.
Joan Marie is survived by William Phillips, Jr. (Lynne) of Sammamish, WA; Maureen Mattis Newnam (Joseph) of Honey Brook, PA; Michele McGovern (Dr. B. Richard McGovern) of Coatesville, PA; Anne Murphy (Gerard) of Arlington, VA and Selbyville, DE; Christopher Phillips (Ellen) of Medford Lakes, NJ; Daniel Phillips (Janice) of Bloomsburg, PA; and Marie Miller (Stephen Morris) of Wayne, PA. Additionally, Mrs. Phillips was blessed with 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Joan Marie is also survived by her in-laws Mary T. Phillips of West Chester, PA; Kathleen S. and Thomas P. Phillips of Park City, UT and Dr. Joseph A. Phillips of Philadelphia, PA.
Mrs. Phillips enjoyed competitive golf and was an active member of the Bala Golf Club Women's Team. In 1991 she became a member of the “Hole in One Club” and was recognized by the Women's Golf Association of Philadelphia for her achievement. Joan was also the recipient of several awards including Club Champion at Bala. In later years, she was a member of St. David’s Golf Club and Glenhardie Country Club in Wayne, PA.
Joan Marie and her husband were enthusiastic supporters of the University of Pennsylvania’s Broadway Theatre Group which benefited The Children's Aid Society of Philadelphia. For many years she sponsored the education of two children from Guatemala through a Catholic Charities program.
Her other interests included following the activities of her grandchildren with the same passion, pride and love she had for her own children; participating in her husband's Girard College Class reunions, cooking, international and domestic travel and the St. David’s Dance Group. In retirement Joan and her husband enjoyed spending winters in New Smyrna Beach, FL.
All are welcome to attend her Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter Catholic Church, 2835 Manor Road, Coatesville, PA on Monday, July 17, 2017. Visitation with the family will start at 9:30 AM and the service will begin at 11:00 AM. Inurnment will follow immediately at Calvary Cemetery, Old Gulph and Matson Ford Roads, West Conshohocken, PA.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Joan Marie's memory to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
Arrangements are being made by the James Terry Funeral Home, 736 East Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, PA 19335.
