Our devoted father, Jean-Baptiste Sam, 96, of Downingtown, passed away on Friday, November 17, 2023 at his residence.

Born in Cap-Haitian, Haiti, our father Jean-Baptiste was the son of the late Rodrigue Sam and Elucia Saint-Fleur. He was the husband of the late Rose-Marie Brigitte (Dugué) Sam, who passed away in December 2011.

Our father, Jean-Baptiste, was of the Catholic Faith.

     Having to say goodbye to a father is never easy. This strong, loving, and generous patriarch marked the life of his children, and of his entire family.

     Respected tender responsible father, a man of principles, citizen of Haiti who served and loved his country. A hard worker who turned his mechanical tools and garage into a temple, into a livelihood. A father who gave his love and energy for the well-being of his family; who sacrificed himself for us, his children, while being present in our lives. A true pillar, a family man who cherished all family moments and situations.

     Our dad, our darling Papi, this beautiful, precious soul who filled with humility, honor, and dignity the mission that God entrusted to him: That of being a father and husband worthy of his name.

     Glory to God who gave us this precious gift! Thank you to our God who by his grace prolonged the life of our father to 96 and half years. Years which were shaped by his fear of God, of the scout laws engraved in his heart, of the application of Haitian values of his time, and his daily reading of the Bible.

     A man of great faith, we are so proud of our hero, and of having had him as a father. His way of seeing and living life are for us, his children, an example of SERENITY. A child of God who sings in all circumstances.

     DO NOT BE AFRAID!

     LET’S LIVE A SIMPLE AND HIDDEN LIFE!

     DO NOT INVTE HATE IN YOUR HEART!

     INSTEAD, FORGIVE! This inspiring creed emerging from his reassuring and comforting voice, exhorting us to keep our faith in all circumstances, and to pray without ceasing. Through these words, our father patiently always led us to see things differently, and with serenity. His sense of observation made him strong and wise.

     Dear dad, beloved Papi, after having lived a long, blessed, and fulfilled life, GOSLEEP IN PEACE IN THE HOUSE OF YOUR GOD! Your life has ended, but your sweet memories remain forever present in the depth of our hearts.

Our beloved father, Jean-Baptiste, is survived by his children: Elvire Sam, Rose-Laure Sam Jean-Baptiste and Karlo Jean-Baptiste, Gertrude Sam Papillion and Wilner Papillon, Marjorie Michel, and Francoise Josée Sam; his grandchildren: Nadine Francois, Rénel Sam, Karl-Stéphane Jean-Baptiste, Karlo Jr. Jean-Baptiste, Cédric Dubé, Krystelle Dubé, Wilnie-Rose Papillon; and his great-grandchildren: Kathiana Prévius, Fardelle Prévius, Rénaldine Sam, and Christ-Andy Sam; his brothers: Jacquelin Sam, Antoine Sam, Jean-Mary Sam, Michel Sam; his nephews and nieces.

In addition to his wife and parents, our dad was preceded in death by his daughter, Nicole Sam.

A visitation will be held on Friday, December 1st from 4-6 PM at James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, PA 19335.

 A second visitation will be held on Saturday, December 2nd, 2023 from 9:45-10:45 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 332 Manor Ave., Downingtown, PA 19335. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM at the church.

Interment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery, Downingtown, PA.

The family requests that any flower arrangements sent to Jean-Baptiste’s funeral consist of primarily white flowers.

Memorial contributions in Jean-Baptiste’s name may be made to Abramson Cancer Center.

Notre dévoué père, Jean-Baptiste Sam, âgé de 96 ans, est décédé le vendredi 17 novembre 2023 en sa résidence à Downingtown, Pennsylvania.

Né au Cap-Haïtien, en Haïti, notre père Jean-Baptiste était le fils de feu Rodrigue Sam et Elucia Saint-Fleur. Il était l'époux de feu Rose-Marie Brigitte (Dugué) Sam, décédé en décembre 2011.

Notre papa, Jean-Baptiste était de confession catholique.

     Devoir dire adieu à son père n’est jamais chose facile.  Ce patriarche fort, aimant et généreux a marqué la vie de nous, ses enfants, et de toute sa famille.

     Tendre père responsable, respecté, homme de principes, citoyen d’Haïti qui a servi et aimé son pays; un dur travailleur qui a fait de ses outils et de son garage mécaniques un temple familial, un gagne-pain.  Un père qui a donné son amour et son énergie pour le bien-être de sa famille; qui s’est sacrifié pour nous, ses enfants, tout en étant présent dans nos vies.  Un véritable pilier, l’homme des moments et situations familiaux.  

     Notre papa, notre papi chéri, cette belle âme précieuse a rempli avec humilité, honneur et dignité la mission que Dieu lui a confiée: Celle d’être un père et un époux digne de ce nom.

     Gloire à Dieu qui nous a fait don de ce cadeau précieux! Reconnaissance et remerciements à notre Dieu qui par sa grâce a prolongé la vie de notre père.-  96 années, lesquelles ont été façonnées par sa crainte pour Dieu, les lois de scouts gravées dans son cœur, l’application des valeurs haïtiennes d’alors, la lecture quotidienne de la bible.  

     Homme de grande foi, nous sommes si fiers de notre héro, et de l’avoir eu pour père.  Sa façon à lui de voir et de vivre la vie ont été pour nous ses enfants, un exemple de SERENITE.  Un enfant de Dieu qui chante en toute circonstance.

     N’AYEZ PAS PEUR!            VIVONS SIMPLE, VIVONS CACHE!                  NE PAS HAÏR!

     DE PARDONNER!  Le credo stimulant venant de sa voix rassurante et réconfortante, nous exhortant à garder notre foi en toute circonstance, et de prier sans cesse. A travers ces mots, tout en utilisant de la patience, notre père souhaiterait toujours nous amener à voir les choses d’une autre manière, avec sérénité. Le sens de son observation l’a rendu fort et sage.

     Papa chéri, papi amour, après avoir vécu une longue vie bénie et remplie,

     VAS, DORS EN PAIX DANS LA MAISON DE TON DIEU!

     Ta vie s’est arrêtée, mais ton doux souvenir reste a jamais présent au fond de nos cœurs.

Notre bien-aimé père, Jean-Baptiste, laisse dans le deuil nous, ses enfants: Elvire Sam, Rose-Laure Sam Jean-Baptiste et Karlo Jean-Baptiste, Gertrude Sam Papillon et Wilner Papillon, Marjorie Michel et Françoise Josée Sam; ses petits-enfants: Nadine François, Rénel Sam, Karl-Stéphane Jean-Baptiste, Karlo Jr. Jean-Baptiste, Cédric Dubé, Krystelle Dubé, Wilnie-Rose Papillon; et ses arrière-petits-enfants : Kathiana Prévius, Fardelle Prévius, Rénaldine Sam et Christ-Andy Sam; ses frères: Jacquelin Sam, Antoine Sam, Jean-Mary Sam, Michel Sam; et ses nombreux neveux et nièces.

Outre son épouse et ses parents, notre père a été précédé dans la mort par sa fille, Nicole Sam.

Une veillée de prière aura lieu le vendredi 1er décembre de 16h à 18h à la maison funéraire James J. Terry, 736 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, PA 19335.

Une deuxième visite aura lieu le samedi 2 décembre 2023 à partir de 9h45-10h45 à l'église catholique Saint-Joseph, 332 Manor Ave., Downingtown, PA 19335. Une messe funéraire chrétienne aura lieu à 11 heures du matin à l'église.

L'inhumation suivra au cimetière de l'église catholique St. Joseph, Downingtown, Pennsylvania.

La famille demande que toutes les compositions florales envoyées aux funérailles de Jean-Baptiste soient composées principalement de fleurs blanches.

Des dons commémoratifs au nom de Jean-Baptiste peuvent être faits au Centre de cancérologie Abramson.
