Gloria J.O. Fredrickson

March 8, 1938 ~ February 8, 2024 (age 85) 85 Years Old

Tribute

Gloria J.O. Fredrickson, 85, of Elizabethtown, Pa, passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2024 at the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown.  She was the beloved wife of the late John Fredrickson, with whom she shared 56 years of marriage prior to his passing in 2013.

Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Thomas R. and June A. Welsh Younger. She grew up in Broomall, Pa and moved to North Carolina and New Jersey while her husband was in the United States Marine Corps. They settled in Bayville, NJ, where they raised four of their five children. After moving back to her childhood home in Broomall, they had their fifth child in 1970 and remained there until 2003. Gloria and John moved to Coatesville and lived there until she moved to the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown in 2020.

In the mid-1970s, Gloria went to work for the Marple Newtown School District as a part-time school bus driver and then moved on to be a child accountant in the administrative offices. She retired from the school district in 2014.

Gloria was heavily involved in the Eastern Star and Amaranth organizations. She was a Past Worthy Matron, the highest level in her local chapter. John was a Past Worshipful Master with the Freemasons and together they both organized and attended many events. Being a part of these organizations brought much joy to their lives and they forged very close friendships.

Gloria was a strong and independent woman who did not shy away from a challenge. It was not unusual for her to pack up her kids and take them camping for the weekend. There are fond memories of camping along the Loyalsock river, witnessing the wild horses of Chincoteague, spending summers in Avalon, and many others. She was known for her quick wit, one-liners and the talent to tell it like it is.

In her downtime, Gloria was an avid reader and an excellent and patient sewer. She enjoyed playing Scrabble (without a dictionary), card games, Monopoly, and other strategy games.

Gloria is survived by four children, John H. Fredrickson, Peter D. Fredrickson, June A. Wilson (Robert) and Mary M. McKinney (Robert); eight grandchildren, Ashley, Jennifer, Thomas, Christine, Kari, Kelsey, Jack and Chloe and by three great grandchildren, Ethan, Emerson and Edison.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Thomas J. Fredrickson.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 17, 2024 at Hibernia United Methodist Church, 220 Hibernia Road, West Brandywine, Pa.  Family and friends will be received from 9:45-10:45 a.m.

Interment will be private with the family in Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown, Pa.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Helping Hands Fund for The Masonic Village.
