David L. Service

May 23, 1934 ~ March 28, 2021 (age 86) 86 Years Old

Tribute

David Leon Service, 86, of Newtown Square, passed away the morning of Sunday, March 28, 2021 at Riddle Memorial Hospital. Born to the late Bruce Edward Service and Constance nee Mills in Grosse Pointe MI, David was the loving husband of Claire Service, nee Henneka, for almost 60 years of marriage.  They would have celebrated their 60th anniversary on April 15, 2021.

Dave served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1956 until he was honorably discharged in 1958.  He returned stateside and soon began his career in the insurance business.  Eventually he owned an agency and ran that successfully for more than 40 years. He held numerous professional designations during his illustrious career.

Dave enjoyed golfing, swimming, woodworking, reading and nightly cribbage games with Claire.

His faith was central to his life. Over the years he was involved in several men’s Bible studies including three weekly studies he attended virtually during the pandemic. He served in many different roles in his local church – formerly Memorial Baptist Church in Huntingdon Valley, Pa – including many terms as a deacon and elder.  He was on the board of directors for years for Priority One, a men’s ministry.  He was especially proud of that role because he served alongside his close friend and spiritual father, Bob McCook, who was the founder and executive director of that ministry. At the time of his death he was serving on the Board of Insight Christian Counseling with his longtime pastor and friend, Paul Randolph who is the executive director.

He thoroughly enjoyed his time in New Hampshire where he and Claire have a home near the coast.  In his later years, it was here that he was most content.

Without question his greatest pride and joy was his family.  He adored his wife and deeply loved his children, Karen and Bob.  He also loved his six grandchildren - Benjamin, Alexandra, Caitlin and Madelyn Service and Jacob and Grace Montgomery.  They were a great source of pride for him.

In addition to his wife, Claire, David is survived by his children;  Karen Montgomery and her husband Mark and Bob Service and his wife Debbie; grandchildren, Ben, Alex, Cait, Maddi, Jacob and Grace.

David is preceded in death by; his father Bruce E. Service, his mother Constance M. Service and his brother VAdm James E. Service.
