Daniel R. Shoop

Daniel R. Shoop, 87, of West Chester, passed away on Friday, August 25, 2017. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Mary J. Shoop, with whom he shared 58 loving years of marriage at the time of her passing in 2013.

Born in Joliet, Illinois, he was the son of the late Howard and Olga (nee Larson) Shoop.

Daniel graduated from Purdue University in June 1952 with a degree in Civil Engineering and received his Professional Engineering License in 1964.

He proudly served his country as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers during the Korean Conflict. Upon his return to the States, Dan began his career with the Pennsylvania Railroad and continued in the industry until his retirement in 1998.

Daniel was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Exton for 49 years, where he served in many different capacities over the years and was honored as an Elder Emeritus. He was a proud member of the R.O.B. Club, belonged to the Philadelphia chapter of the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical/Historical Society. He was an avid Philadelphia sports fan but also held a special place in his heart for the Chicago Cubs because of his childhood in Illinois, and was particularly thrilled and excited when the Cubs recently won the World Series! He was a history / Civil War buff and enjoyed traveling, especially to railroad and war sites. But most of all, Daniel enjoyed spending time with his family and serving God through his strong faith.

Daniel is survived by his 4 daughters: Jeanne Greene (Donald) of Lock Haven, PA, Elizabeth Dickinson (Randall) of Downingtown, Karen Shoop of West Chester, and Susan Shoop of Downingtown. A sister Sally Hahn (Paul); brother in law David Christianson; 4 grandchildren: Nicole (Matthew), Daniel, Matthew and Matthew; great grandchild Elizabeth; He was also predeceased by a daughter Amanda Shoop; his step-mother Mildred Shoop and a brother Robert Shoop.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Friday, September 1, 2017 at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 101 Worthington Rd, Exton, where family and friends may call from 10:00- 11:00 a.m. A visitation will also be held on Thursday, August 31, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 East Lancaster Ave., Downingtown. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
