Gladys E. Stevens

Gladys E. Stevens, 94, of Thorndale, passed away on Friday, December 30, 2011 at the Brandywine Hospital. She was the beloved wife of the late William L. Stevens.

Born in Thorndale, Gladys was the daughter of the late Emerson and Mary Wagner Wilgis.

She was a 1937 graduate of Downingtown High School.

Gladys was a homemaker most of her life, but had worked at the Thorndale Post Office and Collins Aikmans Textile Mills.

She was a lifetime member of the Thorndale United Methodist Church, where she was the financial secretary.

Gladys also was involved with the Girl Scouts and numerous church activities.

Mrs. Stevens is survived by her children, Ruth A. Battin and her companion, Douglas R. Hedrick, of Thorndale, Mary J. Helwig and husband, Terry, of Gettysburg and William A. Stevens of Ardmore; daughter-in-law, Donna Stevens; brother, Allan Wilgis of Casselberry, Fla., 9 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was also predeceased by her son, Charles E. "Butch" Stevens; brothers, Charles and Edwin Wilgis; and sister, Ruth Gill.

A graveside service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at the Hopewell United Methodist Cemetery, 852 Hopewell Rd., Downingtown.
