Walter Elmer Smith, 86, of Thorndale, passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2011, at his home, in the care of his loving family and hospice.

He was the beloved husband of Joyce Hesser Smith, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage.

Born on March 25, 1925, Elmer was the son of the late Dennie and Elizabeth Osborn Smith.

He was a 1943 graduate of S. Horace Scott High School in Coatesville.

Elmer proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during WWII with the 609th Tank Destroyer Battalion under General Patton. He attended many reunions with the group in various places in the U.S.

Before his retirement in 1986, he worked at Lukens Steel Company for 41 years in the weld shop.

Elmer was one of the founders of the Caln Little League many years ago. He belonged to the VFW Post 287.

He enjoyed wood working and crafted wonderful toys and decoratives, many in hard woods. He also enjoyed bowling, golf, camping, square and round dancing, and especially, traveling.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Smith is survived by his children, Walter E. Smith, Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of PA, Joanne Dorsey and her husband, Eddie, of PA, and Debra Guyer and her husband, Richard, of SC; six grandchildren, Chad Smith, Janice Vrable and her husband, John, Chris Karmilowicz and her husband, Jon, Dyana Ezrah, Tracey Brewer and her husband, Dale, and Colleen Brown and her husband, John; and eight great grandchildren.

He was also predeceased by his brother, W. Norman Smith.

Family and friends are invited to call from 8:30 - 10:30 am on Tuesday, December 27th at the James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am at St. Joseph Church, 338 Manor Ave., Downingtown.

Interment will be held in St. Joseph Cemetery, Downingtown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Neighborhood Hospice, 400 E. Marshall St., West Chester, PA 19380.
