Ellen Dawn Jewell, 84, of Downingtown, formerly of Exton, passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2012 at St. Martha Manor.

Born in Syracuse, NY, Dawn was the daughter of the late Donald F. and Mary Ethel Foster Dillon, a 1949 graduate of Nazareth College in Rochester, NY, and beloved wife of the late Ernest H. "Ernie" Jewell, Jr. They had shared 54 years of marriage when he passed in May 2006.

Mrs. Jewell was a teacher for 35 years, with over 20 in the Downingtown School District before retiring in 1990.

She was a member of St. Joseph Church in Downingtown, attended Daylesford Abbey, and was a former member of Ss. Philip and James in Exton. She was active in their Small Church group, Bible Study, and served as a Eucharistic Minister. 

Dawn was a volunteer and docent at Brandywine Battlefield. She and Ernie were period reenactors there, and they volunteered with Bethesda Project’s “My Brother’s House.”

She was an avid bridge player and history lover. She enjoyed traveling, entertaining, and attending any event involving her family.

Mrs. Jewell is survived by her children, Joseph D. Jewell (Valerie), of Fairfax, VA, Martha Kolb (Joseph), of Exton, Kathryn O'Connor (Steven), of Downingtown, and E. Daniel Jewell (Carol), of Broomall; and nine grandchildren, Theresa (Phillip), Joseph, Michael, Steven, Kyle, Eric, Jacob, Ryan, and Adrian; brother Donald Dillon (Nancy), of Buffalo, NY; sister-in-law, Regina, wife of the late John F. Dillon, of Marcellus, NY.

Visitations will be held from 6-8 pm on Friday, January 13th and 9-10 am on Saturday, January 14th at the James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, January 14th at St. Joseph Church, 338 Manor Ave., Downingtown.

Interment will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Martha Manor, 470 Manor Ave., Downingtown, PA 19335.
